Leadership & Staff
Jody Villadsen - Secretary
I was born and raised in Vancouver. After graduating from Point Grey Secondary School I went straight into the workforce in various office related positions and found I had an interest in bookkeeping so attended BCIT in the evenings to complete Accounting 1. In 1977 my husband Flemming and I were married and spent all of our free time back packing and camping throughout southern BC. We found that we spent so much time travelling into central BC that in 1983 we moved to Williams Lake to explore a ranching lifestyle. While in the Cariboo we started a family and now have two sons. We stayed in Williams Lake until our sons graduated from high school and then finding the employment opportunities better on the coast moved to Squamish. Our sons also came down and the oldest, Brady, works and lives in Vancouver while the younger, Bryce, works and lives here in Squamish.

Past Leaders and Musical Support
Kayla Matzen, Music DirectorKayla started working with the United Church in 2007. Her calling was with children and music at the Canadian Memorial United Church in Vancouver. She grew to love the children and the teachings of the United Church while attending UBC to complete a BA in Music. The work Kayla did with Canadian Memorial helped her apply and be accepted into the Bachelor’s of Education program at UBC. In 2012 Kayla graduated from BEd program and moved up to Squamish and was immediately welcomed into the community. Kayla currently is working at the Squamish Academy of Music as a voice teacher and volunteers her leadership with the Sound Youth Chorus. Kayla is honoured to be the music director of Squamish United as SU has a strong reputation in the community for their music.
Joy Keeler, Keyboardist
I am 16 years old, currently attending Howe Sound Secondary School, Grade 11. I've been playing piano since I was 5 years old and am now at the ARCT level. My ambition is to be a writer and pursue my piano career. At the moment, I am studying with international renowned Professor Lee Kum-Sing, he is the Head of the Piano Department at the Vancouver Academy of Music and is the Professor of Piano at the University of British Columbia.
Carol Grolman - Worship Accompanist
At the age of 13, Carol was asked to fill in as a summer replacement for the organist at the small town church where she grew up. That summer job ended six years later when she graduated from High School and moved on.
After moving from Ontario to the West Coast and becoming a member of Squamish United Church in 1979, Carol became involved with the choir and as a musician at the keyboard on a regular basis. As a principal musician, Carol enjoys ensemble work with many other talented singers and musicians.
Over the years, Carol has enjoyed her roles in church and in the community as piano teacher, founding member of Howe Sound Performing Arts Association, producer of Carol’s Carols (an annual Christmas affair) and many other events.
With the popularity of her own composition, Do We Really Believe, Carol was encouraged to produce her first CD with the same title, an eclectic collection of Christmas songs, with many originals. Composing and arranging is something that she has come to enjoy very much.
Marilyn Caldwell - Choir Director
Marilyn was involved in school music programs in High School and then went on to UBC to take her degree in Music Education. During that time she accompanied a Children's Choir at Highlands United Church in North Vancouver.
After moving to Squamish in 1980 and starting her teaching career she began directing the Junior Choir at Squamish United and later became director of the Senior Choir.
Marilyn enjoyed many years as an elementary music teacher, and although she doesn't teach music in school any longer she enjoys the fellowship and musicianship in working with the adult choir at Squamish United Church.
She is has seen the choir grow in numbers and ability over the years. Some of the Choir's accomplishments have been the production of three recordings and the presentations of several cantatas.
She enjoys the spiritual nature of expressing faith through music!
Arlene Ingraham - Accompianist
Most of my life has been spent in this area, for the first 10 years I lived at Woodfibre before moving to Squamish. When first married I lived in the Okanagan, returning to Squamish in May, 1980 where my children were raised. Early music experiences included piano lessons and singing in the United Church junior choir. After graduating from high school I studied at the University of BC where I earned a Bachelor of Education in Music.
My working career was varied. I taught music in several provincial school districts; on Vancouver Island, in the Similkameen, the Okanagan and finally at Brackendale Elementary here is Squamish. After marriage, I taught piano privately and later played for ballet lessons and exams at both the Garibaldi School of Dance and the Howe Sound Academy of Dance. A side job for several years was servicing the Carlton greeting card display at Save-On Foods, Fields and Pharmasave.
As an adult United Church member I have belonged to the UCW for over 30 years, played hymns and songs for Sunday School, taught Sunday School classes, and served on the worship committee and the board at Squamish United Church. Joining the choir as accompanist began in the late 1980’s. All of these various experiences have provided me with many opportunities for interest and enjoyment.
The church board is the organizing government of the church. The board establishes policy, oversee’s finances and ensures the church is in smooth running order while seeking to maintain spiritual health.
