All The Saints

The practice of recognizing those who have contributed to the deepening of the Christian faith by noting their names or offering special prayers is not one that fared well in the emerging Protestant Church.  The idea of  Saints as mediators was greeted by reformers as placing an unnecessary barrier between God and the People.  Worse, it was seen as a form of idolatry, where saints were venerated as lesser deities.  The solid critique of the veneration of the saints nevertheless has meant that we have little in Protestant churches that reminds us of the great works of the people of God through out the world and throughout the history of the church.  The problem we face is that local and current people who do or have done great works may not find their way on to any list, and these lists need to be updated and made regionally relevant.  What is a saint?  According to Paul,  all the people of God are the saints of God.  However, it is good to hold examples as an inspiration for the community.  In the bulletin every Sunday, there is a paragraph "This Sunday in the Church Year"  In that space the "saint" for the day or during that week is remembered, with a brief biography and a note of their accomplishments.  We recall the saints to inspire us to the work of building up God's commonwealth in the world.  The Calendar of Saints we will be using is one developed by the Presbyterian Church in the United States.  The following is the explanatory text, and the list of saints from that document:
